James Hawkins is a seasoned criminal defence lawyer with over 15 years of litigation experience and a reputation for tireless advocacy, deep compassion, and results-driven legal strategy. Based in Calgary, James has built a practice focused exclusively on criminal law — a passion he’s pursued since before graduating law school.
Respected across Alberta and beyond for his calm, confident courtroom presence, James has represented individuals from all walks of life — including doctors, lawyers, teachers, police officers, corporate professionals, and oilfield workers. His experience spans thousands of hours of courtroom experience, including complex and high-profile cases, with proven success before both judges and juries.
James earned his law degree (J.D.) from Queen’s University in 2010, graduating on an accelerated timeline of 2.5 years. While at Queen’s, he studied International Criminal Law at the university’s International Study Centre in the U.K., earning an academic certificate in Public International Law. He furthered this specialization with studies in Public International Law and International Criminal Law at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
His defence career began early, in his second year of law school, advocating for incarcerated individuals through the Correctional Law Project (now the Prison Law Project). There, he appeared before the Parole Board of Canada and developed a strong foundation in prisoner rights and institutional law.
Following graduation, James articled and practiced with one of Canada’s most respected criminal defence lawyers in Toronto, where he gained valuable experience at all levels of court — including the Supreme Court of Canada.
Today, James leads Hawkins Law with a singular focus: protecting the rights and freedoms of his clients through clear strategy, experienced representation, and personalized guidance at every step of the legal process.
He is a member in good standing with both the Law Society of Alberta and the Law Society of Ontario.

Even though I had a criminal matter, Mr. Hawkins does not cast judgment on anyone and is very supportive. He is amazing at explaining the process of things and it is interesting how Mr. Hawkins will give legal advice from an objective standpoint.
